Born Kazuyoshi Nakano, Horiyoshi IV is a fourth-generation tattoo master from the illustrious Horiyoshi lineage in Japan, officially receiving the honorary title in 2020. As the last apprentice and heir of the legendary Horiyoshi III, he continues the family tradition of creating intricate and culturally significant Irezumi tattoos. Since deciding to pursue tattoo artistry in elementary school, Horiyoshi IV began his professional journey at the age of 24. He now operates from a studio located above the Yokohama Tattoo Museum, owned by his father, Horiyoshi III, and managed by his mother, Mayumi Nakano.
Horiyoshi IV’s tattoos reflect deep cultural narratives and historical tales. A notable piece on his back depicts Yotsuya Kaidan, one of Japan’s most famous ghost stories, illustrating the character Oiwa, who returns as a ghost to avenge her betrayal. This profound connection to traditional Japanese art and storytelling is central to Horiyoshi IV’s work, as he continues to uphold and evolve the esteemed legacy of the Horiyoshi name.
