Black and Gray Tattoos

Black-and-gray tattoos are sometimes referred to as “jailhouse” or “joint style” and are believed to have originated in prisons, where inmates had limited access to the tools they needed to create tattoos. In this situation, they resorted to using guitar strings as needles and using ashes from cigarettes or ink from pens to produce their tattoos.
